Maintaining Boho Braids

I know we have so many different stories of boho braids not lasting, shedding, tangling etc. But that’s ok I am here to show you step by step how to care for your boho braids. The magic is all in the night routine. These steps should be repeated every… single… evening for the best results.

First, let me quickly debunk the myth that boho braids are not high maintenance… THEY ARE. Just because you spend more money on it doesn’t mean that less things need to be done to take care of it. I am here to show you how to get your money’s worth…

You see, the thing with boho braids is it can look absolutely amazing the first two week and you feel like you don’t need to do anything. But then after BAM💥 tangles, dryness, no curls. Thats why maintenance is required consistently. Boho braids (especially coloured boho) requires daily moisture and attention to the curls. Having braids inbetween the curls is a major factor as to why the hair needs to be catered to every day because it can very quickly just wrap around the braid itself, and without the daily moisture, scrunching of the curls, and brushing through, these curls can become very, lose its curl pattern and be very hard to look after once its been neglected for a while. Below is a video I have created to show you step by step night time routine for boho braids. Doing this at night time means you just need to unravel it in the morning, and slay for the rest of the day.

Steps for night time routine

  • Section your braids into 6 equal parts. Focusing on one section at a time.

  • Spray water onto the section

  • Add a nice lightweight leave in conditioner. So far my favourite has been the Fenty Hair ‘The Homecurl’. It’s best not to use a super heavy product as you don’t want a lot of product build up.

  • Using a brush that has the look of a tangle teezer or you could just use a tangle teezer and brush through the hair thoroughly.

  • Add a few drop of oil to your scalp and hair, then proceed to twists or plait the hair.

  • Plaiting or twisting the hair gives different results, choose best what works for you.

  • Repeat steps for all sections

  • Lastly put on a satin bonnet. If you’d like to shop our bonnets click the button below.

Washing your boho braids

Yes the beauty of these boho braids lasting longer is that you can go in and have a good shampoo session. Which is perfect because for a style that can last up to 8 weeks I am sure you would want to wash it ever so often. Shampooing your boho braids can be done at least once every week, but must be followed with the night time routine mentioned above. Here are a few tips to use when washing your boho braids.

  • Soak your hair in lukewarm water.

  • Put the shampoo in your hands first and add a lot of water to your hands too. Then rub your hands together until everything is fully lathered and bubbly.

  • Now apply the shampoo to your scalp and massage, then rub down to the ends.

The reason why you rub it in your hands first is so that all that rubbing won’t be done on your scalp which could make your braids frizzy/messy for no reason.

  • Thoroughly rinse out the shampoo, shampoo can be repeated one more time if you feel the need to do so.

  • Apply a mask (leave on for a few minutes) or a conditioner and brush through with a tangle teezer, then rinse out thoroughly to avoid an itchy scalp after

  • To dry hair can either be diffused or air dried after doing the night routine mentioned above.

  • Once your hair is fully dried add a bit more leave in conditioner as water can be very drying.

  • And voila, your scalp and hair is feeling fresh again
